Planning and Community Development
The Planning Department is committed to providing assistance for new building projects and the renovation of existing commercial and industrial buildings as well as multi-family and single family homes. The department is responsible for the administration of permits and zoning code inspections including rental housing code compliance, International Property Maintenance Code, zoning ordinances, and housing redevelopment.
The Planning Department promotes new economic development, facilitates industrial and commercial business retention and expansion, and provides staff to the Downtown Development Authority and Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.

The Zone and Code Administrator is a liaison to the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals. The director will also develop other professional organizations, providing advice to other departments, coordinate development activities and be involved in or initiate grant applications for departmental functions.
Developers, project managers and property owners are encouraged to call and schedule a preliminary meeting with the Zoning Administrator to review the ordinance requirements and discuss any particular characteristics of the site, as well as review the procedure and time line for the approval of permits. At your initial meeting you will also be provided with any applicable applications for current grants and qualifying tax exemption status.
