Our Department is responsible for 70.72 miles of streets in our Local (50.62 miles) and Major (20.15 miles) Street system. These duties include, but are not limited to, cold patching, storm sewer maintenance, street/traffic sign replacement, street painting and snow plowing/salting. Property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice.

Sewer

The DPW is responsible for the maintenance of sewer and storm lines ranging in size from 8” to 148" in diameter on public property (utility lines on private property are maintained by the property owner). Waste water treatment is handled by the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Joint Sewage Treatment Plant.  You can reach the plant by calling (906) 774-2255.

Water

Our Department performs all maintenance on the water transmission system on public property (utility lines on private property are maintained by the property owner). This system consists of approximately 45 miles of water mains, approximately 650 valves and approximately 620 fire hydrants. There are also approximately 3,500 water taps in the system. We are continually replacing old water meters throughout the City.

Solid Waste

The City contracts with Great American Disposal for collection and disposal of curbside trash and debris, including recyclable materials, throughout the City.  You can call G.A.D. for schedules and information at (906) 774-9006.
