City Council

About the Council

The Mayor and six Council Members make policy decisions in accord with procedures and responsibilities set out in State law. The City Manager carries out policies and directives of the Mayor and Council.

The City Council appoints several boards and commissions as well as various advisory committees and task forces which are created from time to time.

The Mayor is also a council person with full voting privileges.  Every two years the City Council elects one of the present members to become Mayor.

Mayors in council-manager communities of Michigan, in addition to being a voting member of the  council as a whole, also have the added functions of serving as public spokesperson for the community, soliciting citizen views and interpreting policies to the public.
